Student Travel Hacks for Bristol – Getting Around Like a Pro

Welcome to Bristol! Whether you're new to the city or just looking for ways to make your travel easier (and cheaper!), we've got you covered.

As a student, getting around efficiently can save you time and money, so here are our top travel hacks to help you navigate Bristol like a pro.

Buses: Your Budget-Friendly Chariot Awaits

Bristol’s bus network is one of the easiest ways to get around, especially if you’re heading to uni or exploring different areas. First Bus manages the bus routes in and around Bristol, so downloading their app and checking their website will provide you with all the information you need to navigate the Bristol bus network.

  • Get a Student Bus Pass – First Bus offers discounted student travel passes that can save you a lot of money over the year.
  • Use the First Bus App – Real-time updates, mobile tickets, and journey planning in one place. Alternatively, the West website allows you to compare different modes of transport (including cycling routes, but see more on that below!)
  • Know Your Key Routes – The U1 and U2 are your go-to for university travel, while the 70, 72, and 73 are lifesavers for getting around the city.

Cycling: The Fast, Cheap & Green Option

Bristol is a very cycling-friendly city, and it’s often the fastest way to get around. Plus, it’s great for your fitness and the planet! The local universities also have information of specific student discounts or groups on their websites, so do check if you’re eligible for these first.

  • Get a Second-Hand Bike – Look for deals on Facebook Marketplace or at local bike shops. Don’t forget to get a good bike lock too! At a minimum, using a D-lock is recommended, but if you can budget for it, a secondary chain lock will provide an extra layer of security.
  • Free Bike Maintenance – The university and local cycling groups often run free check-ups and provide basic tools for maintenance.
  • Use Cycle Paths – Bristol has plenty of dedicated bike lanes, including the scenic Bristol-Bath Railway Path.
  • Voi E-Scooters for Shorter Trips – If cycling isn’t your thing, Bristol’s Voi e-scooters are a fun and affordable alternative.

Walking: The Best Way to Discover Bristol

Bristol is a compact city, and walking is often the best way to explore hidden gems, scenic spots, and quirky cafés. When the weather is nice, it’s a lovely way to kill some time and see the city and surrounding areas!

  • Learn New Routes – Check Google Maps for walking shortcuts and cut down your journey time. If you want to explore the countryside, check out the West website or the Go Jauntly app.
  • Harbourside & Clifton Walks – Take the scenic route and enjoy the best views in the city.
  • Walk Safe at Night – Stick to well-lit paths and walk with friends when possible.

Bonus: Student Travel Discounts – Save While You Explore!

Where to Find the Best Travel Deals:

  • Railcards: Get a 16-25 Railcard for 1/3 off train fares – perfect for trips home or weekend getaways.
  • Coach Discounts: National Express and Megabus offer great student discounts for budget-friendly travel.
  • Unidays, Student Beans, & Totum: Check for travel discounts on these student discount platforms.
