Brighton’s Best: Top Things to Do as a Student

Brighton is easily one of the most exciting and vibrant cities to be a student in the UK. Whether you’re here for the buzzing nightlife, quirky independent shops, or the stunning seaside views, there’s something for everyone. If you’re new to the city or just looking to explore beyond your usual haunts, here’s a guide to the best things to do as a student in Brighton.

Cultural Attractions & Tourist Must-Sees

Brighton is packed with culture, and while you might be here for your studies, you’d be missing out if you didn’t check out some of the city’s most iconic attractions.

  • Royal Pavilion – A must-see landmark, this exotic palace was built for King George IV and is an architectural gem with its stunning domes and lavish interiors.
  • Brighton Pier – A classic for a reason. Grab some chips, hit the arcade, or brave the rides for some nostalgic seaside fun. (If you’re already in the city, do remember to register for your free Resident’s Card to get free entry!)
  • Brighton Beach – Whether it’s for a summer picnic, a winter stroll, or just some relaxing downtime off campus, the beach is always a good idea. But don’t forget to wrap up warm on those windy days!
  • Brighton Museum & Art Gallery – Right next to the Royal Pavilion, this museum offers an insight into the city’s rich history and artistic heritage.

The Lanes

If you love getting lost in winding alleys filled with unique shops, historic buildings, and cosy cafes, The Lanes is the place for you. This area is home to some of Brighton’s best independent boutiques, jewellers, and vintage stores. You’ll also find some incredible eateries here, ranging from seafood restaurants to plant-based spots, so it’s definitely worth a having a wander and explore to find your favourite spots!

North Laine

North Laine is The Lanes' edgier younger sibling! It’s packed with colourful street art, independent shops, and some of the best coffee spots in the city. Check out Snoopers Paradise for vintage treasures, Komedia for comedy and live performances, and Kensington Gardens for a laid-back stroll through Brighton's most eclectic shopping district.

Fun fact: whilst they sound the same, “Laine” and “Lane” have different meanings! “Laine” is an old Sussex dialect term for a division of farmland, although you’ll find the bohemian, eccentric buzz of North Laine is long removed from its agricultural name.

Top Music & Nightlife Venues

Brighton’s nightlife is legendary, and whatever your vibe, there’s a venue for you. Here are some of the top spots by genre:

  • Indie & Alternative: Green Door Store – A gritty, intimate venue under the train station that hosts amazing up-and-coming bands. Keep an eye out for their themed nights too!
  • Electronic & House: Patterns – A top-tier club with some of the best DJs and house nights in town.
  • Rock & Metal: The Hope & Ruin – A beloved grassroots venue for live bands upstairs and a great pub with an eclectic feel downstairs.
