Flu Season Survival Guide: Student Winter Wellness Tips

When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, it seems like everyone around you starts catching colds or the flu. While there isn’t a definitive reason for why this happens, as a student living in shared spaces, with a hectic schedule and a tight budget, it can feel like catching a winter bug is almost unavoidable. The good news? There are some simple things you can do to lower your chances of getting sick, take care of yourself, and look out for your housemates too.
Flu or Cold? What’s the Difference?
Both the flu and a cold are caused by viruses, so antibiotics won’t help, no matter how bad you feel! The main difference is in how they hit. The flu usually comes on fast and hits hard, with symptoms like fever, aches, and extreme tiredness. A cold tends to be slower and milder, with sniffles and maybe a cough being your main problems.
That said, everyone reacts differently, so even if you feel okay, it’s important to avoid spreading germs to those who might not cope as well.
If you do get sick, make sure to drink plenty of fluids like water, herbal teas, or soups. It’s also worth keeping a stash of cold and flu remedies from your local pharmacy to help with congestion and aches. And remember: stay warm, rest up, and try to avoid contact with others until you’re feeling better.
Should You Get a Flu Jab?
If you can, definitely consider it! While the NHS offers free flu vaccines for certain groups (you can check online if you’re eligible), did you know some pharmacies also offer paid flu jabs? If you’re someone who always gets knocked out by the flu (or just want to play it safe) it’s worth looking into. A quick jab can mean an easier time if you do catch the virus, and it also helps stop the spread to your friends and housemates.
Another must? Keep your hands clean! Carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser for when you can’t wash your hands properly, and make sure to cough or sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands.
Boosting Your Immune System
With all the hustle and bustle of uni life, it’s easy to forget about looking after yourself. But keeping your immune system strong is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick.
- Eat well: Try to stick to a balanced diet (if you need help, check out our handy Meal Prep Plan).
- Sleep properly: Deadlines make it tough, but even short nights add up, so try using tools like your complimentary Sound Asleep Club membership for better rest.
- Move your body: Whether it’s a walk, a gym session, or some quick home exercises, keeping active helps a lot.
And don’t forget to stay warm and get some fresh air! Since your Joint house has all bills included, you don’t have to stress about heating costs. Keep your space cosy and ventilated to keep germs at bay.
Small Changes, Big Impact
Seasonal sniffles might feel unavoidable, but even small changes can make a big difference. It’s all about balance; looking after yourself doesn’t have to mean overhauling your life, just making a few tweaks here and there.
